A prominent feature in the Little Rock downtown area, the Albert Pike Memorial Temple of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Freemasonry is an iconic structure of monumental proportions located in the middle of the historic Quapaw Quarter. A striking example of Greek Revival architecture, the Temple brings to the quarter a solemnity and sense of ancient history. On the Register of Historic Places since 1986, the Pike Memorial Temple is a city block long, three stories high, and fronted by nineteen massive Greek ionic columns and two dramatic double-headed eagles. In spite of the size and monumental style of the building, few people in Little Rock know the full story behind this building. It was built in the early 1920s by Arkansas members of the Masonic Order for the commemoration of the life and works of Albert Pike, nineteenth-century resident of Little Rock, prominent figure in Arkansas history, and internationally acclaimed Masonic philosopher. 

A native Arkansan raised in Little Rock, Maureen Richmond comes by her enthusiasm for the beauty of her hometown and its unique architecture honestly. As a child, Richmond developed an early affection for what would become the Quapaw Quarter when she attended Trinity Cathedral Episcopal Day School at 17^th and Spring, right in the thick of captivating historic homes. Many of her earliest and fondest memories center around this neighborhood. Richmond was equally entranced by the colorful and fascinating stained-glass windows and soaring interior arches at Trinity Cathedral, constructed in the English Gothic Style during the period 1884 – 1892 and on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. Richmond currently pursues a doctoral degree at Arkansas State University in Heritage Studies, a field which includes historiography, historic preservation, cultural analysis, museum management, ethnography, archival methods, and heritage tourism. She holds the B.A. and M.A. in English.
